Elena Martinelli, PhD, MPH, is a Research Professor in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and the associate director of the Viral Pathogenesis Core of the Third Coast CFAR. She was previously a scientist and PI at the Population Council in New York where her research focused primarily on HIV transmission, pathogenesis, and cure using non-human primate models and samples from individuals living with HIV. Martinelli contributed to the understanding of the impact of HSV-2 infection on HIV/SIV transmission and the role of integrin a4b7 in HIV pathogenesis.
Dr. Martinelli will present her latest research and findings on the role of TGF-b in HIV infection and will describe some of the novel assays and capabilities of the VP Core. Finally, she will introduce her international research with pregnant women living with HIV in Nigeria, resulting from a collaboration with the social and behavioral researchers at the Population Council.
