CFAR Administrative Supplements

Funding Opportunity Description

The NIH has released a Request for Applications (RFA) for administrative supplements to Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) P30 grants, including the Third Coast CFAR. Supplements will be competitively funded to support innovative, short-duration (8 month) research projects consistent with NIH HIV research priorities (NOT-OD-15-137), and that will generate pilot data for a subsequent NIH grant application. Applications are due at NIH on May 28, 2020, with internal budget and subcontract deadlines beginning in early May. View previously funded administrative supplements.

The Third Coast CFAR will have an internal competition to choose the supplement applications that can be submitted to NIH in May. Internal proposals are due to the Third Coast CFAR on Monday, March 23 by 11:59 p.m.

Areas of Interest

  1. Methodology and Data Science of HIV
  2. Increasing the Integration of Substance Abuse Services and HIV Prevention and Care
  3. Impact of Food Insecurity on HIV Prevention and Care
  4. Human Mobility and HIV
  5. Overcoming Barriers to HIV Reservoir Clearance

Eligibility

Project leaders for supplements in all scientific areas of interest listed above must be new to HIV research. Two categories of faculty new to HIV research are eligible to lead a supplement proposal: (1) early career investigators who have never received a R01-equivalent, P-series or U-series research grant; (2) established investigators in non-HIV fields who have never received an NIH award specifically for HIV research. Post-doctoral fellows are eligible to apply if they will assume a faculty position by the time the supplement project and funding begins (and a letter stating that is required from their academic leadership in the application to NIH). Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, as well as individuals with disabilities, are always encouraged to apply for NIH support.

Studies that are a continuation of previously funded CFAR supplements or funded NIH applications, and do not address new specific aims, are not eligible for funding under this announcement. Additionally, a proposal for a CFAR supplement that is linked to a submitted or pending NIH proposal is not eligible.

Funds Available and Project Period

Supplement awards are for eight months (8/1/2020 – 3/31/2021) with maximum funding per application of up to $150,000 Direct Costs, not including third party indirect costs.

Internal Proposals

If you are interested in applying for an administrative supplement, please email a one-page proposal to Justin Schmandt by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, March 23. Plans are not binding, but the one-page proposal must include the following information (under each heading below):

  • Project leaders (names, titles, and institutions)
  • Team members (names, titles, and institutions). Team members do not have to be exclusive to one proposal and can be named on more than one proposal.
  • Working project title
  • Brief synopsis of the project
  • Preliminary plan for subsequent NIH grant application that this proposed supplement will enable
  • Plans, if any, for the supplement proposal to utilize CFAR core services
