Research Coordinator (TURNNT Study)

Position Description

We are seeking a Research Coordinator to coordinate a project titled the Trying to Understand Relationships, Networks, and Neighborhoods among Transwomen of color (TURNNT) Study, a new study comprising transgender women of color in New York City, with an emphasis on Black transgender women. TURRNT has a focus on HIV prevention and aims to characterize the health profiles and trajectories of Black transgender women, including the effects of relationships, networks and neighborhoods on their health. The Research Coordinator will support all aspects of this large, multi-year project, including assisting with workflow, study coordination, and survey development. Performs intra-operative monitoring and ensures the accurate execution of research protocols.

Job Responsibilities

• Coordination: Ensure study’s day-to-day needs are met as well as develop study protocols. Oversee calendar and workflow, and ensure deadlines are met. Facilitate communication between investigators and with scientific advisory board and community advisory board. Provide oversight and direct the research team including the Research Data Associate and part-time Research Assistants. Ensure vendors and consultants are compensated and ensure study has needed supplies. Ensure  all  expense reimbursements are submitted properly and promptly.
• Survey Development and Management: Lead the development and revision of surveys about relationships, networks, neighborhoods and health outcomes and health behaviors, includng PrEP use and adherence.
• Research Support: Conduct comprehensive literature searches and reviews to answer relevant research questions. Use EndNote to insert and format references on publications and grant submissions.
• Reporting and Analysis: Assist with preparation of progress reports, presentations, and manuscripts by interpreting study findings and drafting results. Provide reports to all necessary parties (e.g., the principal investigator, sponsoring agency, etc.) on the progress of the study as needed.
• Research Administration: Assist with research administration, which could include editing abstracts, manuscripts, and grants and preparing materials for submission to internal oversight offices such as the Institutional Review Board.
• Human Subjects’ Research: As applicable, oversee the submission of  necessary  documents  required by the NYU Institutional Review Board (IRB), and any other appropriate parties in order to obtain approval to conduct human subjects’ research (e.g., ensures the update and submission of necessary documents and/or forms to appropriate destination).
• Decision Making and Problem Solving: Combines and evaluates information and data to make decisions about relative importance of information and choosing the best solution to solve problems. Resolves complex situations and refers unsolved issues and questions with recommendation to supervisor.

About NYU’s Spatial Epidemiology Lab

The Spatial Epidemiology Lab (www.spatialepilab.org), directed by Dr. Dustin Duncan, is currently housed in the New York University (NYU) School of Medicine’s Department of Population Health and is a dynamic and active research group focused on connecting neighborhoods and health. The lab employs a geospatial lens in studying health behaviors and outcomes, especially sexual health and sleep health. The lab has an emphasis on health disparities and vulnerable populations, with a strong focus on sexual and gender minority populations, including Black gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men and Black transgender women.  Methodologically, the lab applies spatially explicit approaches such as computer-based geographic information systems (GIS), web-based geospatial technologies, real-time geospatial technologies, and geospatial modeling techniques. Using innovative methods like global positioning system (GPS) technologies, the lab aims to relate neighborhood attributes to health-related behaviors and outcomes. By studying specific neighborhood characteristics, we hope to inform salient and effective interventions and policies. We work collaboratively with communities and colleagues in New York City and from around the world.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in social science or public health, epidemiology, geography or related field.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Highly motivated and responsive with a keen attention to detail
• Ability to work with minimal direction and on a self-directed basis as well as in a team setting.
• Experience in research program management, supervising staff members and working in collaborative environments
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Must possess efficient time management skills with an ability to meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with HIV prevention and/or treatment research among Black transgender women.
• Experience with survey development.
