Using Electronic Medical Record Data for HIV Research:
Resources at Northwestern University and the University Of Chicago
Drs. Jessica Ridgway and Chad Achenbach presented data resources the CFAR Clinical Informatics Group (CIG) has created with data derived from the Electronic Medical Record systems at the University of Chicago and Northwestern Medicine. The data sets include medical records from thousands of patients and can support research on the HIV prevention and care continuums and non-AIDS comorbidities. The workshop orients users to the construction and features of each system’s data sets and offer opportunities to brainstorm ideas for new projects, publications, and applications for NIH funding.

Dr. Chad Achenbach is an Associate Professor at the Feinberg School of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and the Center for Global Health. Dr. Achenbach is a specialist in Infectious Diseases with clinical interests in the treatment of HIV infection and co-infections. He is currently participating in several research projects and training programs through the Center for Global Health, including PEPFAR Nigeria, NU AITRP and the Eramune study. Dr. Achenbach also co-leads the Clinical Informatics Group in the CFAR’s Clinical Sciences Core.
Jessica Ridgway, MD, MS

Dr. Ridgway’s primary research focus is the impact of technology on healthcare epidemiology, particularly the use of informatics in infection control and HIV prevention and care continuums. She develops and studies syndromic surveillance algorithms using electronic health records, and co-leads the Clinical Informatics Group in the CFAR’s Clinical Sciences Core. Dr. Ridgway also has a particular interest in the epidemiology of multidrug-resistant bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and multidrug-resistant Gram-negative organism.
