Funding Opportunity Description

The Third Coast Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and the Northwestern Pepper Center within the Center for Applied Health Research on Aging (CAHRA) are pleased to share a new funding opportunity open to members of any CFAR or Pepper Center in the U.S. The RFA promotes new interdisciplinary research into aging among people living with HIV (PLWH) by bridging research excellence between both NIH networks and supporting the development of the next generation of HIV Geroscience translational researchers.

The Northwestern Pepper Center is one of 14 Claude D. Pepper Older American Independence Centers (OAIC), a national network that investigates ways to maintain or restore older adults’ independence. Led by Drs. Michael Wolf and Jeffrey Linder, the Northwestern Pepper Center focuses on enhancing primary care for older adults with multiple medical conditions to achieve optimal health, function, independence, and quality of life. The new center is housed in CAHRA, which is part of the Institute for Public Health and Medicine (IPHAM).

Eligibility

PI-eligible investigators associated with any CFAR or Pepper Center are eligible to apply; proposals from early stage investigators are especially encouraged. Post-doctoral fellows are NOT eligible unless they will be a faculty member on July 1, 2021 and can provide a letter from their department chair to this effect. Strong preference will be given to:

  • early stage investigators (ESI; per the NIH definition, including extensions due to time out for family care or other factors considered by the NIH, see https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-09-034.html),
  • studies that utilize specimen repositories and databases supported by the NIH CFAR or Pepper Center networks, and
  • applications from established aging investigators without prior HIV funding interested in expanding into aging and HIV as a new area.

Funds Available

This network-wide collaboration anticipates funding two to four pilot grants through this RFA, each with total funding (including indirect costs) of $25,000 to $50,000. Potential applicants are encouraged to contact Third Coast CFAR or Pepper Center administrators as soon as possible to be connected to mentors and relevant resources.
